I am pleased to share my new co-authored article published in the Economic Review by the Croatian Economic Association.

Title: Shift in European–Central Asian Trade Dynamics due to US–EU Sanctions on Russia. Full text in PDF: https://hrcak.srce.hr/file/487809

The study examines how sanctions on Russia have redirected EU trade toward Central Asia, utilizing time-series data, an ARDL model, and a qualitative review of trends from 2000 to 2023. Findings highlight new opportunities for diversification, energy security, and strategic economic diplomacy.

Editorial: The Effect of Russian War in Ukraine on Scholarly Research Activities

2023-06-06

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has led to significant regional political tensions and has severely disrupted academic institutions in Ukraine and neighboring countries such as Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. Many universities in Ukraine have faced challenges, particularly in the Eastern Ukrainian cities of Kharkiv, Kherson, and Mykolaiv, where physical damage to facilities has occurred. As a result, hundreds of faculty members have been displaced, and thousands of students have had to migrate, leading to a loss of financial resources.

Unfortunately, the war has redirected funding away from Ukrainian academic institutions and research projects, diverting it to address urgent humanitarian needs and military efforts. Consequently, funding that would have supported scholarly activities like research grants and conference participation has been reallocated to support the immediate priorities related to the conflict.

On July 12, 2022, the Institute of Eastern Europe and Central Asia conducted a webinar on "Academic life during the Russian war in Ukraine." The event's objective was to highlight the current state of science and education in Ukraine in the context of a full-scale, unprovoked war by the Russian Federation against Ukraine. It is the second month of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The war has prompted a rethinking of the global economy's structure, especially the potential food shortage. Enormous damage is already done to the world food supply chain. Ukraine, long considered Europe's "breadbasket," lately sells more than 40% of its wheat and corn to Africa and the Middle East, where fears of future food shortages and price hikes in some countries may cause hunger civil unrest. Soon, researchers will be analyzing and seeking answers if the Russian economy is ready and capable of paying the price for committed damage in Ukraine and if the world willing to challenge Russia to avoid spreading the world into countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia?
